Arthur F. Berton, 84, Bear Creek, passed away Friday, February 9, 2024 at Allied Hospice, Wilkes-Barre. Born in Maspeth, NY, he was the son of the late Arthur and Martha Ruckel Berton and was a graduate of Grover Cleveland High School, Ridgewood Queens, NY. Immediately after high school, Art enlisted in the Navy and proudly served his country from 1957-1963 aboard the USS Hailey DD256. Art started working in the mailroom at CitiBank at the age of 20 and retired 40 years later as a Vice President.
Art met Lorraine Edna Earl, the love of his life, at the tender age of 16 and they married 5 years later in the Middle Village Methodist Church on June 24, 1961. Art had a servant’s heart and served the Lord throughout his life. He was a Deacon and then an Elder at First Reformed Church of the Palisades in Fort Lee, NJ for many years. Art served in Pastoral Care at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck NJ and then at Geisinger Wyoming Valley for a total of 50 years. After he retired, he and his “bride” as he affectionately called his wife Lorraine, continued to serve the Lord. He volunteered with Hospice for over 20 years, giving hope and peace to terminally ill patients and their families. He was instrumental in starting the No One Dies Alone program at Geisinger, as well as REACH, a local mission. He served on the Trustee Board at Parsons PM Church where he was an active, much beloved member. Art was also President of the PM Preacher’s Pension Fund.
In March of 2023, Art was diagnosed with and selflessly battled cancer with grace and courage, more concerned with his family than himself. He continued to praise the Lord and passed away peacefully on February 9th surrounded by his family. Art was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Anne. He is survived by Lorraine, his wife of 62 years, daughters, Kelly Berton of Emerson, NJ, Barbara Berton of Spring Brook Township, PA, Erin Baker of Pocono Summit, PA, 9 grandchildren and his brother Kenneth Berton of Leland, NC.
