Dorothy Oster, lifelong Wyoming Valley resident, loving grandmother, mother and devoted friend, passed away at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital on December 14, 2024, from gastric complications. Born Dorothy Ann Chalk on January 17, 1939, to Anthony and Blanche Krishefski, Dorothy was an energetic powerhouse of a woman who could always find something to do, and always knew the best way to do it. She worked hard at diverse jobs all her life, including multiple stints as a garment worker, product demonstrator at Sam’s Club, and nanny. A 1956 graduate of Plymouth High School, Dorothy maintained friendships with her classmates that lasted until the day of her death. She was deeply proud of the place where she grew up and the people she knew. More than one person referred to Dorothy and her husband Peter as the salt of the earth – you were always welcome in their home.

If someone needed assistance, Dorothy was there as a pair of helping hands or an understanding ear. She had advice to offer on any subject from painting to pantry moths, from laundry to loading a car, from siding to slot machines. An avid gardener, she had Peter took great pride in maintaining their yard, taking immense care of that outdoor environment through every season and every kind of weather. Dorothy’s greatest joy in life was her granddaughter, Lexie, whose paintings and art projects dotted the walls of her home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter J. Oster; her brother, Anthony J. Chalk, Jr.; and her sister Sandra Chalk. Surviving are her brother Robert Chalk, sister Joann Laskoski, son David and his wife Claire, of Dallas, Texas; son Mark and his wife Cheryl of Shavertown; granddaughter Lexie Oster of Shavertown; and several loving nieces and nephews.
