Florence Sokol

Florence G. Sokol, 94, Dallas, passed away peacefully, Saturday, February 5, 2022 at The Village at Greenbriar, Dallas, where she had been a resident since 2006. Florence was born on June 15, 1927 in Wilkes-Barre to the late John and Anna Hvozdovic Emerick. She was a graduate of Coughlin High School, class of 1945 and Wilkes-Barre Business College.

She worked as a receptionist for the late Dr. John Harris and Dr. Walter Mokychic. She was a devout Catholic and was a member of Our Lady of Victory Church, Harvey’s Lake.

Florence married the late Andrew J. Sokol on June 25, 1949 at the former Sacred Heart Slovak Church, Northend Wilkes-Barre. They moved to Dallas and her husband became the first USPS city letter carrier in Dallas, serving there for 30 years.

She was a kind and gentle soul who always had a smile. Florence never had a negative word for anyone she met and looked for the good in everyone. She and her husband loved taking bus trips.

Florence loved animals. She had four dogs: Sandy, Pudgie, DeeDee, and Bunny.  Bunny accompanied her to Greenbriar. She loved collecting anything Deer. She loved to sing and was in her church choir and often sang solo for wedding masses.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew; Brother, John Emerick ; Great nephew, Michael Emerick and numerous cousins of the Hvozdovic and Emerick families. Surviving are her niece and Godchild, Michelle Pisaneschi and her husband Argante, Larksville; Nephew, Gerard Emerick and his wife Anne, Chester Springs; Great niece, Mary Jonelle Menz and her husband Brian, Wayne, NJ.; Great Nephew, Matthew Emerick, Silver Spring, MD; Great Grandnephews, Michael, John, and Walter Menz, Wayne, NJ.; Cousins, Christine Blight, Vestal NY, Maryann Gulius, Leesburg, Fla., Mary Ann Klein, Albany NY, John Hvozdovic, Blacksbug, VA and Joseph Hvozdovic, Wilkes-Barre.

Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, February 12, 2022 at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Victory Church, Harvey’s Lake, with her cousin, Father Andrew Hvozdovic, officiating. Friends may call from 9:30 AM until time of service at the church.  Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Dallas. Masks and social distancing practices will be required.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the SPCA of Luzerne County, 524 E. Main Street, Wilkes-Barre. Her niece, Michelle would like to especially thank Cheryl, the administrator and all the employees of the Village at Greenbriar who so lovingly took care of her for the past 15 years. Florence loved living at Greenbriar and took part in every activity they had available until she was no longer able to do so. A special thank you to the employees of the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, especially the numerous nurses who visited her along with Deacon Pat Massino and Paul Fontinella.
