Joan Callahan Shrey

March 2, 1943 — January 12, 2021

Joan Marie Callahan Shrey, 77, Dallas, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with ALS at her daughter Susan’s and son-in-law, Dennis home.

Joan was the daughter of the late Bernard and Mariam (Grace) Callahan. Born on March 2, 1943. She graduated from Central Catholic High School.

After graduation she married Joseph L. Shrey of Shavertown and traveled as he was in the US Army. To name a few states besides PA, she lived in N. Carolina, S. Carolina, Virginia, Texas, and Germany where she welcomed her fourth child, Sherry Lynn, born in Augsburg in 1969.

Joan was a wonderful mother, exceptional Gramma, Great Gramma, a loving sister, Aunt, and friend, She retired from Mercy Center, Dallas where she enjoyed being around the Sisters of Mercy. She was a member of Our Lady of Victory Church, Harveys Lake.

After retirement, she went full force Gramma mode. She loved to visit Fort Lee, NJ to visit her youngest child Julie (Jordan) and grandson, Jack. She had many good times with them.

Her favorite pass time was going to see her two grandsons, Brandon and Bradley play football for Scranton Prep. She was a huge fan for sure. Joan loved to go out to dine, shop, and of course vacation. Her last trip was with her daughter Susan (Dennis) family to the Dominican Republic where she had the time of her life. She also loved the Philadelphia Eagles, horse racing, and ice skating.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents as well as her husband Bernard and a daughter Sherry Lynn Shrey. Surviving are her son, Joseph Shrey, Kingston, and James Shrey, Edwardsville. Daughters, Susan (Dennis) Shovlin, Dallas, and Julie (Jordan) Miller, Ft. Lee, NJ. Sisters, Betty Faey, Mary (John) Capatano, and Ruth Ann (Dave) Hergan. Her beloved grandchildren, Robert (Kim) Shrey, Harding, Valerie (Zachary) Shrey Gramps Brandon Shovlin, Pittsburg, Bradley Shovlin, Kansas, Denise Shovlin, Pittsburg, Jack Miller, Ft Lee, NJ. Valerie Shrey Gramps, and Robert Shrey were very special to Joan having been the first grandchildren and she adored them very much. Also five great grandchildren, Zachary, Liam, Sophia, Taia, and Nora Gramps. Nieces and nephews.

Joan will truly be missed and loved forever. A special thanks to Dr. Garge, Dr. Allimuden, Home Bound health, Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore (Aaron) for the great care. Brother-in-law, John Capatano for all the daily calls. Drs. Bill and Margie Host. Deacon Tom and Sunny, Father Toomey. The David Abud family. Robin and Shirley for being good friends and neighbors.

Mass of Christian burial will be held, Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 11:30 AM at Our Lady of Victory Church, Harveys Lake Interment will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas.  Arrangements are under the direction of Richard H. Disque Funeral Home, Inc, 2940 Memorial Highway, Dallas, Pa. 18612. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Catholic Social Services, c/o 33 E.
