Mary C. Burke Goode, 72, of Beaumont, PA passed away peacefully on December 18th at home with family after a long illness. Born on October 20, 1952, in Port Griffith, Jenkins Township, PA, to the late Allen J. and Mary Claire Morris Burke, Mary was a 1970 graduate of St. John the Evangelist High School, Pittston, PA where she was a member of the girls’ basketball team. She received an associate degree from Luzerne County Community College, a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Mansfield University, Mansfield, PA and her Master’s Equivalence Degree in Education from Marywood University, Scranton, PA.
Mary’s gift for teaching children with learning support needs shone brightly during her over 38 years as a beloved teacher at Wyoming Area, Tunkhannock Area and Lake Lehman school districts where she retired from in 2014. Her dedication extended beyond the classroom where she mentored fellow educators sharing her knowledge and passion for teaching and was a strong advocate for her students. She was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, PSEA and the National Education Association, NEA.
Mary enjoyed vacationing at the beach with her family and was active in her children’s sports activities as an enthusiastic fan and assisting with coaching her daughter’s Gate of Heaven middle school basketball team. She was a lifelong reader, especially in her retirement years and enjoyed luncheon dates with friends. She was an avid Penn State football fan, never missing a televised game. She loved her dogs over the years: Murphy, Tracy, Maddy and Cooper who provided her with great comfort, especially during her illness.
Her parents preceded her in death along with her brothers, John A. Burke (sisters-in-laws Peggy and Ama), and Robert J. Burke. Surviving is her husband of 38 years, Steven M. Goode, son, Steven A. Goode, Phoenix, Arizona, daughter, Katie Johnson, (Mark) and the light of her life, grandson, Colin Allen, Derry, New Hampshire brother, William Burke (Zofia), Tunkhannock, PA and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express its gratitude to all Mary’s friends, neighbors and family who provided her and Steve with so much love and support as well as all her physicians and Allied Hospice Care who provided her with outstanding comfort care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, December 27, 2024 in Our Lady of Victory Church, 16 Second Street, Harveys Lake, PA at 10am. The family will receive friends and family from 9 am until the time of Mass in church. Interment will be private later at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of The Richard H. Disque Funeral Home, Inc. 2940 Memorial Highway, Dallas, Pa.
