Melvin Szish, 86, Luzerne, passed away, Sunday, September 23, 2018 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital. Born in Luzerne, he was the son of the late Wasyl and Rose Buchak Szycz and was a graduate of Luzerne High School class of 1950. He served in the United States Air Force from 1950 until 1970, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant. He served a combat tour in Vietnam where he distinguished himself, earning an Air Force Commendation medal and Air Medal as a rescue helicopter gunner. After being discharged, he was a Production Supervisor with Owens Illinois from 1971 until his retirement in 1985.
Melvin was a member of St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Edwardsville. Knights of Columbus Council #2987, Luzerne. American Legion Post #0945.
He was preceded in death by a Daughters, Joanne Smith and Linda Sukaloaski, Sisters, Anna, Mary, and Kathy. Brothers Andrew, Wasyl, John and Michael. Surviving is his wife of 65 years, the former Rose Mills, at home. Son, Michael Szish, Mt. Top. Numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Sister, Olga Morgenfruh.
Funeral will be held Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 11:00 AM at St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 70 Zerby Ave. Edwardsville. Interment will be in St. Vladimir’s Cemetery. Larksville. Friends may call from 10:00 Am until time of service at the church. Military Honors will be presented at the Cemetery. The church is handicap accessible. Donations in Melvin’s memory may be made to St. Vladimir’s Church mortgage fund. c/o 70 Zerby Ave., Arrangements are under the direction of The Richard H.
