Robert W. Monk, 84 of Shavertown, died on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at his residence. Born September 21, 1932, in Dallas, he was the son of the late Earl and Irene Johnson Monk. Bob was a graduate of Dallas Borough High School, Class of 1950. At age 18, he took over his deceased father's plumbing and heating business, successfully running it for 44 years until 1994, when his son Dan took over the business. Under Bob and his wife Jean, Monk Plumbing and Heating was known for its high quality work and excellent customer service. Bob was an avid sports fan, but his favorite was baseball, a sport where he coached Little League, Teeners, and American Legion baseball for over 20 years. Many of his former players remember not only his great knowledge of baseball, but his sense of humor, and interesting rides home after practice. Bob also enjoyed bowling in the 1960's and 70's. A devout Christian, who loved celebrating his favorite time of the year, Christmas, with both family and friends, Bob was a long time member of St Paul's Lutheran Church in Shavertown until the church moved to Dallas. He served as a member of its church council and other committees for many years. Most recently he was a member of Cross Creek Community Church, Trucksville. Bob was active in, and generous to, a variety of charities over the years, including his churches, Volunteers of America, Camp Orchard Hill, and Cross Creek Community Church. Bob will always be remembered as a man not shy of voicing his opinion, a caring friend, and a man who loved his family and spending time with them. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death in 1994 by Jean, his beloved wife of 42 years, brother William Monk and sisters Charlotte (Tooties) Denmon and Doris Mallin. Bob is survived by his sons Dan Monk and his wife, Holly, of Dallas, and Earl Monk and his wife, Lori, of Bucks County, PA; five grandchildren, Robert, Jim, Ryan, Lindsey, and Courtney Monk. Also surviving are his sisters, Jean Wilson and her husband Tex of Dallas, and Ruth Quinn and her husband, Martin, of White Haven, PA, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loving companion of 22 years, Diane Devine of Shavertown. Diane and Bob enjoyed travelling, spending time with their grandchildren, and their condominium in Florida. Funeral will be held Monday, May 8, 2017 at 10:00 AM at The Richard H. Disque Funeral Home, Inc., 2940 Memorial Highway, Dallas, with The Rev. Dave Martin, pastor, Cross Creek Community Church, Carverton, officiating. Interment will be in Warden Cemetery, Dallas, Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 6 pm at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be made to Cross Creek Community Church, 370 Carverton Road, Shavertown, 18708 or Camp Orchard Hill, 640 Orange Road, Dallas, Pa. 18612.
